At 85, Nancy Johnston Mulford from Skillman passes away.
Nancy Johnston Mulford, who was from Skillman, died on January 12 at Stonebridge at Montgomery. She had been fighting Alzheimer’s disease for a long time. She turned 85.
She was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on October 28, 1937. Her parents were Herbert J. and Gladys Semple Johnston. She attended Amundsen High School in Chicago and Park College (now Park University) in Parkville, Missouri, where she got her degrees. She went to International Christian University in Mitaka, Japan, for her junior year of college. She later went to Chicago to study at McCormick Theological Seminary.
Nancy did a lot of volunteer work in every place she lived
She got married to the Rev. David E. Mulford in 1961. Her Presbyterian minister husband was the pastor of churches in Albany, New York, Chatham Township, and Vero Beach, Florida, where they lived. When her husband retired in 1994, they moved to Black Mountain, North Carolina, and lived there for 12 years. In 2006, they moved to Skillman, where they now live in Stonebridge at Montgomery.

Nancy did a lot of volunteer work in every place she lived. She participated in American Field Service, a student exchange program, while she lived in Chatham Township and was an area representative. She was on the boards of parent-teacher groups and led the Friends of the Library of the Chathams. In 1983, Morris County named her an Outstanding Volunteer.
She was also a member and officer of P.E.O.
Everywhere she lived, she went to a Presbyterian church and served as a deacon and an elder. She was also a member and officer of P.E.O., an organization for women with chapters in New Jersey, Florida, and North Carolina that helps women get education opportunities. She was a member of the Nassau Presbyterian Church and the Princeton Women’s College Club when she lived in Princeton.
Nancy and her husband enjoyed leading seminars for the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church USA for people getting ready to retire. She ran the Country Store at Stonebridge for a long time, helping people who couldn’t shop independently. Nancy used her artistic and teaching skills to help many generations of children and adults. Her classes on making Pysanky Ukrainian eggs were especially well known. Her creative skills were endless, and the people with whom she shared her creations and skills are the ones who will remember her.
Who is Her Husband?
Her husband, David, of Skillman, her son, Stephen Mumford, of Baltimore, survives Nancy MD; her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Dr. David Youmans, of Princeton, NJ; and her grandchildren, Carey, and husband Ammar Shallal of Princeton, NJ, Avery and husband Andrew Sellers of Lusaka, Zambia, and Nicholas Youmans and partner Michael Collins of Brooklyn, NY. Zayn and Remy Shallal, and Owen Sellers are her great-grandchildren. Bonnie Jacobi, who lives in Fairview, NC, is her sister and also lives. A number of foreign students who lived with the Mulfords and became a big part of their families will miss her, including Samantha James, Niloo James Hennings, June James Bechler, and their families from Sri Lanka, Bambang Gunawan and Erika Schoonhover-Lovera from Indonesia and the Netherlands, and their families.
